No more supporting older browsers starting 2010 [April Fools' Joke]
Since TinyMCE is widely used in many web applications, Moxiecode sees the need to use its market position to support the notion of upgrading to current versions of today's browsers. This means that the support for IE6 and IE7, Opera 8 and Safari 3 is coming to an end as of January 2010.
This decision has been made in order to dramatically reduce testing and bug fixing efforts as well as time and money. All webworkers are encouraged to educate their users accordingly and make them use the latest available browser version.
Further information will be published during the next days on Moxiecode's TinyMCE project page as well as Moxiecode's blog.
Appearently some users are dumb enough to miss that this was a joke so I added a notice about it.

That sounds like a good timetable for IE6, but not for IE7. I think phasing out support for IE7 in less than one year is unnecessary and NOT GOOD.
IE7, like every single web browser on the market, has its share of bugs, but it has nowhere near the number of bugs that IE6 has. It also supports a good amount of the CSS 2.1 spec.
I can tell you that there is no way in the world that I would cutoff my IE7 users Jan 2010, so I guess I will stop upgrading at that point.
It's hard enough to get people off of IE6, but to force them onto IE8 before it has a chance to mature would create a rift between ivory tower developers and real users. Or do you plan on telling users that they are forced to go to Firefox?

So you didn't find that funny... Well, the subject itself is anything but hilarious - I must agree with you there.

I think dropping support for old browsers if very reasonable.
There can be a new version that supports new browsers that can be even leaner and meaner. Those who want to support older browsers can just keep using the old version.
